Projects - Web Enabled Smart Sensor

Camera module

Modified Unattended Ground Sensor with pan/tilt camera. This module was originally intended to be part of an array of sensors for 3-D tomographic imaging.

Introduction

Distant Focus created this sensor from technology developed in the Unattended Ground Sensor program. This sensor was originally created to provide a demo to illustrate aspects of our smart sensor system. The demo consisted of a color camera mounted on a computer controlled pan/tilt mount. The graphical user interface was a Java applet downloaded from the actual sensor module. The computer's processing core was a Pentium II PC104 based system connected to the Internet.

Not Just a Custom Webcam

This is part of a family of smart sensors that leverages the standard Internet protocol, TCP/IP, for communication. There is no reason to limit the system to video imaging. Acoustic, seismic, thermal, and non-imaging infrared can also be deployed. In addition, the integrated microprocessor running the industry standard Linux OS provides a pathway for dynamically adapting the system to the environment.

Distributed Intelligence

An important system feature is inter-sensor communications. Our smart sensors are designed to share information using standard web and Internet protocols. While this demo camera hinted at this capability, our other sensors modules that were part of the Unattended Ground Sensor program were communicating with each other securely to perform distributed computed tomography.
